How to interpret scientific studies: An example

📝 We post a lot of data from scientific studies. How should we correctly interpret them?

💡 Here, we use a hypothetical example looking at the effects of a ketogenic diet on FRAN time. How does eating strictly keto for 6 weeks affects subject’s FRAN time? See fist slide on how such a study can be conducted.

🤯 As you can see on the second slide, we expect much variation in the results. Variation between the subjects at baseline. Some subjects will be fitter than others from the beginning, that’s normal. But -and that’s more interesting- there is also variation in the RESPONSE TO the keto diet.

👉 While most people actually got worse, one subject got better…

↗️↘️ Studies report means, which is a valid way to report whether something works or not for a big population on average, but it does not say anything about the individual response. We are all different, so always be sceptical. Also on the data we post.
